Research on Lymphatic Permeability with Joshua Scallan, PhD
Dr. Joshua Scallan speaks about his research in lymphatic permeability, specifically the ability of molecules such as proteins and lipids to pass through the lymphatic vessel wall into the surrounding tissue. This process is what leads to fluid leakage from the lymphatic system. Some amount of fat deposition around lymph vessels is normal, but in lipedema, both the fluid leakage and the fat deposition occur to a much higher degree. Dr. Scallan discusses how the obstruction of lymph flow can create fat disorders by inhibiting the ability of the lymph system to reabsorb leaked fluid. Dr. Scallan is an assistant research professor at the University of Missouri Medical Pharmacology and Physiology Department, and he researches lymphatic endothelial permeability.
