The Importance of Early Diagnosis for Lipo-Lymphedema with Laura Baker
Laura Baker shares her experience of seeing her body change throughout her life while being met with misdiagnosis and weight bias from health care professionals. Laura reveals how discouraging it was to continually hear that her only solutions were dieting and weight loss surgery. She talks about her regret over not receiving a lipo-lymphedema diagnosis early on, and she hopes that sharing her story will help other women receive treatment sooner. Dr. Herbst stresses the importance of patients advocating for themselves and confirms that the medical world is beginning to recognize the need for much more research into this disease. Laura Baker is a retired school teacher diagnosed with Stage 4 lipolymphedema. Her mobility has been significantly impaired. She continues treatment with MLD, compression garments, and maintaining a healthy diet. Dr. Karen Herbst is a board-certified Endocrinologist and Adipose Tissue Disorder Specialist. She practices at the University of Arizona Medical Center in Tucson, AZ.
