Lipid Accumulation in Lymphedema and Lipedema with Melody Swartz, PhD

Dr. Melody Swartz discusses her research on the lymphatic system, its modulation of lipids, and its effects on immunity and inflammation. She notes that there is clearly a relationship between abnormal lipid accumulation and lymphedema, but that we don’t know why chronic swelling leads to this abnormality or what the relationship is between lymphedema and lipedema. Dr. Swartz talks about the potential of bringing together research on inflammation, lipid metabolism, and vascular biology to make new inroads in understanding lipedema and lymphedema. Dr. Melody Swartz is Professor of Molecular Engineering and a researcher at the Institute for Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago. She is also Director of the Swartz Lab of Lymphatic and Cancer Bioengineering at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland.
